What Yakima actually does to a garage door
Before comparing materials, it helps to name the specific stresses here, because they are not the ones most buying guides assume.
- Low humidity. The valley is semi-arid — annual precipitation is in single-digit inches. Rot and rust, the failure modes that dominate coastal advice, are far less of a threat here.
- Wide daily temperature swings. A 30–40°F difference between afternoon and night is routine. Materials expand and contract through that cycle every day, and joints, fasteners, and finishes take the strain.
- Strong summer sun. High-desert UV is hard on paint, stain, and anything vinyl. South and west-facing doors fade and chalk years before north-facing ones.
- Freezing winters. Below-freezing nights stiffen weather seals, thicken lubricant, and — as covered in our spring failure guide — finish off springs already near the end of their life.
- Dust and agricultural debris. Orchard and vineyard country means fine dust that works into tracks, rollers, and photo-eye sensors.
Notice what is missing: persistent damp. That single fact changes the ranking considerably compared to a guide written for western Washington.
Steel — the default, and usually the right one
Best for: almost every Yakima home.
Steel is what we fit most, and in this climate the reasoning is strong. It does not absorb moisture so it will not swell or warp through the seasonal swing. Modern doors are galvanised and factory-finished, and with our low humidity, rust is largely a non-issue away from irrigation overspray.
Gauge matters more than buyers expect. Builder-grade doors are typically 27–28 gauge; 24–25 gauge is meaningfully more dent-resistant and holds its shape better across the daily expansion cycle. If the door faces a driveway where kids play or a basketball hoop, the heavier gauge pays for itself.
Watch for: dents are permanent in a way they are not on composite, and a south-facing dark-coloured steel door will fade under high-desert UV. Lighter colours and factory baked-on finishes hold up markedly better than field-painted ones.
Insulated or not?
This is the more consequential decision, and it is separate from material. An insulated steel door (polyurethane-injected, typically R-12 to R-18) does three things here that an uninsulated one does not: it keeps an attached garage usable through a 100°F August afternoon and a January freeze, it damps road and wind noise, and — the part people miss — the rigid foam core makes the section structurally stiffer, so the door flexes less and the hardware wears more slowly.
If the garage is attached to living space, shares a wall with a bedroom, or is used as a workshop, insulated is the right answer here. The premium runs roughly $300–$500 on a double door, which the cost guide breaks down in full.
Composite and faux-wood overlay — the carriage look without the maintenance
Best for: homes where appearance is the driver.
These are a steel or foam core with a moulded composite or fiberglass skin embossed to a wood grain, usually finished as a carriage-style door. From the street a good one is difficult to distinguish from real wood.
In Yakima's dry climate the advantage over real wood is straightforward: no seasonal swelling, no cracking as the timber gives up moisture, no re-staining every two or three years. The composite skin also tolerates UV better than stained softwood.
Watch for: price. These start where insulated steel tops out and run to $4,500+ on a double door. And they are made to order, so a damaged section is a lead time, not a stock item.
Wood — beautiful, and a genuine commitment here
Best for: period homes where nothing else looks right.
Real wood doors — cedar, hemlock, redwood — look better than any imitation, and on an older home in Yakima's historic core they can be the only appropriate choice. We service plenty of them and we are not talking anyone out of one.
But the maintenance burden here is real and it is the opposite of the coastal problem. Rather than rotting from damp, wood in a high-desert valley dries out. It gives up moisture, shrinks, and checks — fine surface cracks that open along the grain. Stiles and rails loosen at the joints. Finish on a sun-facing door degrades fast under high-desert UV.
Budget on re-sealing every two to three years, sooner on a south or west elevation. Skipping that is what produces the sagging, split-bottom-rail doors we are called to across the older parts of town.
The weight consequence: a wood door that has absorbed or lost moisture changes weight, and the springs were sized for its original weight. This is the most common cause of premature spring failure we see on wood doors — and why we re-size springs to the door as it is now, not as it left the factory.
Aluminium and full-view glass — modern, and a specific trade-off
Best for: contemporary builds and shop fronts.
Aluminium frames with glass or acrylic infill are light on the hardware, will never rust, and suit modern architecture. The light they let into a garage genuinely changes the space.
Watch for: thermal performance. Even insulated-glass versions do not approach a foam-core steel door, so in an attached garage you will feel both the August heat and the January cold. Fiberglass — the one we rarely recommend here
Fiberglass is light, will not rust, and takes a wood-grain finish well. In a mild coastal climate it is a reasonable choice.
In Yakima it is our least-recommended material, for one specific reason: fiberglass becomes brittle in cold, and our winter nights are cold enough often enough to matter. A panel that would flex and recover in a mild climate cracks here. The strong summer UV also yellows lower-grade fiberglass. Composite skins over a steel core give you the same look with none of this.

If you want the short version: insulated 24-gauge steel for an attached garage, uninsulated steel for a detached shop you do not heat, and composite overlay when the house needs the carriage look. Real wood only if you will genuinely keep up the re-sealing. Skip fiberglass.
