Why This Happens
Garage door springs — either the single or double torsion spring mounted above the door, or the extension springs running along the upper track — are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, typically 7-12 years of normal use, and they wear out even faster with hot Yakima summers and cold winters stressing the metal. You'll usually know a spring has failed if you hear a loud bang from the garage, the door feels unusually heavy or won't lift more than a few inches, or you can see a visible gap in the coil. Once a spring breaks, the door loses its counterbalance completely, so it should never be forced open by hand or with the opener — both can cause further damage or injury. Replacement typically includes matching the new spring's wind and wire size to your original, installing a safety cable to contain the spring if it fails again, and a full balance test to confirm the door opens and closes evenly.

We don't recommend it. Torsion springs are wound under extreme tension and require specialized winding bars and technique — improper handling is one of the most common causes of serious garage door injuries.
If your door has two torsion springs and one has broken, we generally recommend replacing both, since the second is usually close behind in wear and replacing them together saves a second labor visit.
